Not bad for a 7th round draft pick...
...an afterthought in the draft after jamming his fist in a cop's face during a bar brawl in Lincoln, Nebraska, Alfonzo Dennard's draft stock fell from a baker's dozen of fresh Boston Creme donuts (cop reference implied) to that of a box of day old donut holes...
...but what a great deal he turned out to be. The New England Patriots got 1st round value out of their 7th round selection and, as a result, Dennard has received the Hippie Award for Patriots' Rookie of the Year.
Dennard played in just 10 games, starting six of them, which makes him being voted Rookie of the Year by Patriots' fans just that much more impressive. Voting for the award was open to fans only and took place on various social media sites, and the rookie from the University of Nebraska outdistanced fellow rookies Dont'a Hightower, Chandler Jones and undrafted free agent Justin Francis to win the inaugural award.
He proved to be a solid #2 corner opposite newcomer Aqib Talib and was able to pull down 3 interceptions - returning one for a touchdown - forced one fumble, had seven passes defenced and made 35 tackles...
...and was hands-down the steal of the 2012 NFL draft.
Congratulations to Alfonzo Dennard for winning the 2012 Rookie of the Year "Hippie Award!"
Thanks for the effort, Fonz, and we're all looking forward to next season to watch you kick it into high gear!
